Founded by Hilly Kristal on New York’s Bowery in 1973, CBGB became the legendary club that helped launch American punk and new wave. The room gave early stages to the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, Talking Heads, and many other artists who reshaped downtown music. Its raw atmosphere, hand-painted identity, and open-door spirit made CBGB an enduring symbol of underground rock culture even after the club closed in 2006.
